Organization Membership

Join a movement of spiritual communities, organizations, and retreat venues that are committed to doing their part to evolve the paradigm of spiritual leadership!

Why Join the ASI?

We are a dynamic network of spiritual leaders and communities dedicated to professional and personal growth, ethical practice, and integrity. The ASI also offers our members a growing library of resources to support them on their journey towards greater integrity and wholeness.

As a member, your organization will:

  • Gain access to resources that nurture your organization’s evolution and leadership.

  • Be part of a supportive community committed to transparency, accountability, and wholeness.

  • Benefit from a shared commitment to ethical leadership.

When your organization joins the ASI, you commit to:

  • Integrate the ASI Honor Code of Ethics into your staff and volunteer guidance policies.  You may expand the ASI Code to better fit your organization's specific goals and services. However, any additions must not contradict the existing ASI Code.

  • Make integrity a core value of your organization that shapes:

    • Your organizational culture

    • Relationships among staff and volunteers

    • Interactions with those you serve.

  • Make accountability a core value of your organization by agreeing to formulate internal procedures to hold internal leadership, employees, volunteers, etc. accountable in the event that your ethical code is breached.

  • Implement a process for feedback to be received by your organization from all stakeholders your organization serves.

Two spiritual organizations that put their own policies in place prior to the birth of the ASI are Spirit Rock and East Bay Meditation Center. If you would like to reference their procedures as an examples, you can click this article to read an overview of Spirit Rock’s Ethics and Reconciliation Council” or East Bay Meditation Center’s Ethics, Restoration, and Resolution" (ER&R) process.

We know that it takes time and resources to develop and/or revise policies and practices within organizations. The ASI is a member-led organization seeking to help both ourselves and other leaders in this regard. Our community of members share a commitment to integrity. You are invited to join us.

If you would like your organization to join the Association for Spiritual Integrity, please review the membership benefits & requirements below and then complete the electronic application form.

Benefits of Membership

  • Use the the ASI Honor Code of Ethics and Good Practice for Organizations as a framework for your organization’s pursuit of the highest ethical and professional standards.

  • Access to our (Facebook group) community discussion; receive priority posting of your articles in the Media Library; gain information and support from an active network of peer members.

  • Access to collegial meetings, webinars and workshops with lively discussions.

  • An ASI badge of integrity to place on your website and/or marketing materials. Displaying the badge of an ASI member organization on your website and promotional materials says that you are ensuring good practice, that your guests will be protected, and that there is a “do no harm” policy in place on your premises for all who visit.

  • For venues that bring in guest teachers/faculty/facilitators, an integrity clause to include in their contracts.

  • A listing in our public resource Organization Members Directory.

  • Access to our Peer Support offering, which was specifically designed to support ASI members.

And more benefits as ASI grows and evolves in response to our members' needs.

You Can Apply If:

  • Your organization identifies as a spiritual organization or has an explicit spiritual mission.

  • Your organization agrees to integrate the ASI Honor Code of Ethics and Good Practice for Organizations into its general guidance policies for staff/volunteers and ensure that integrity is a core value informing the culture of the establishment, relationships among the staff people/volunteers, and the interactions with those you serve.

  • Your organization’s management draws up and agrees to their own in-house procedures that will respectfully respond to complaints in the event that the ASI Code is breached. The ASI recommends external mediation; we recommend some trained and experienced mediators in the Resources section of our site.

  • Your organization commits to engaging fully in ASI's resolution process if a plausible ethical concern is reported to us regarding your organization's conduct. This involves collaboration with our Evaluation and Restoration Team and may include professional mediation.

  • Your organization agrees to post the ASI membership badge of integrity on your website or social media profiles (if applicable) with the link to "What ASI membership means" to inform your client base of your commitment to integrity and ethics?

  • Your organization agrees to implement a process requesting feedback from your students/clients/community, especially after a special event. ASI offers sample feedback forms to assist you in implementing your feedback request process.

  • Your organization fills out a “Member Organization” application form with accurate information.

If your organization operates a venue for retreats, workshops, and/or trainings, the ASI offers additional and unique support. Please read about "Venues" below.

At ASI, membership implies a commitment to uphold our Code of Ethics in both spirit and practice. While we do not have the resources or the intention to proactively monitor members’ conduct, we have a process in place to address reports of ethical violations raised by students, clients, or peers. This process includes gathering evidence, listening to all parties, and, when possible, offering mediation support. Revoking membership is a last resort, used only when a member’s conduct is found to be in clear and serious violation of our ethical guidelines, and when reconciliation or corrective action is not possible. Our aim is always to act with fairness, transparency, and integrity in protecting the values at the heart of ASI.

The ASI reserves the right to refuse membership. Each application form is read carefully, and all details submitted are checked for authenticity. If an applicant is not who they claim to be their membership application will be denied. Please make sure that we are able to reach you at the contact information you provide in the application.

Venues

Be more proactive in protecting your patrons from potentially harmful incidents.

At the ASI, we understand how important it is for your venue to cultivate trusting relationships with your guests. We know that your reputation depends on facilitating positive experiences for your guests, and that your ability to do so rests upon wholesome interactions between your visiting faculty and the students they guide. We also know that it’s a major challenge to build a culture of integrity within an organization while extending the same standards to your guest teachers and facilitators. This is why the ASI has developed an integrity clause template (below) for our Member Organizations to include in their contractual materials with guest teachers/faculty/facilitators.

Employing this clause will help your organization to:

  • Take preventative measures to protect your guests from potentially harmful experiences while on your property

  • Ensure that those who teach at your facility have pledged to honor the highest level of ethical standards while teaching on your premises

  • Gain leverage in the event that your code of ethics is breached

  • Expand your options for addressing any violations of trust that may occur between leaders/teachers and students while on your site

Integrity Clause Template

Once your membership is approved, you may copy and paste the integrity clause below into your contractual documents or tailor the clause to fit within your current contracts in a way that makes sense to you:

[Organization Name] is a member of the Association of Spiritual Integrity (ASI). As such, we have committed to honoring a code of ethics as outlined by the ASI, to ensure that our own organization, along with our guest teachers/faculty/facilitators, hold ourselves to the highest standards of ethics, integrity, and professional competency. With a vested interest in facilitating the most nurturing and safe experience possible for all of our guests, it is essential that we promote the work of teachers and leaders who are willing to abide by the same ethical standards while visiting and working on our premises. Please help us to ensure an environment of honesty, integrity, compassion, humility, and empathy for everyone. Visit the ASI's website at spiritual-integrity.org/org-ethics to review the honor code to which you are committing by signing this contract.

Support the ASI

Although we offer ASI memberships free to remove all financial barriers, we ask for a voluntary $50 donation to help us fund the organization. Donations are ASI’s sole income, and most of the work done at ASI is on a volunteer basis. If you find value in our mission, please consider donating. ASI is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, and all donations are tax-deductible in the USA (receipt emailed).
